Welcoming hummingbirds with nectar plants….and pests

I found a great post today over at Great Stems, which is a pretty neat garden and wildlife blog.  It makes two good points that I think are important for beginning bird feeders to understand.

The first talks about the necessity of having nectar-producing plants in your garden, especially tubular plants, which hummingbirds prefer.

The second, and equally important, is to remember that another attraction for hummingbirds are “pests” such as mosquitoes, spiders, flies, etc.  These insects are valuable sources of protein for hummingbirds, so you should refrain from using pesticides in your garden to exterminate them.

The post also has a great list of nectar-producing plants that hummers like, as well as a recipe for nectar water.  Check it out.
